What nonfictional books have the committee been reading during lockdown?

What nonfictional books have the committee been reading during lockdown? We asked the HMA committee if they’d had time to do some reading of nonfictional books during lockdown.  Not surprisingly some of the team are working full time with no extra time to read and others have turned to online articles, webinars and podcasts.  For those that have picked up a book, here is what they’ve been reading. Surrounded by Idiots - Thomas EriksonVery interesting analysis of different personality types in the workplace and how each personality types work with each other. What you think you are and what others perceive can often be very different. The Secret - Rhonda Byrne“You will come to know how you can have, be or do anything you want. You will come to know who you really are.” Even if you don’t believe in the power of the universe, this is a book that can inspire anyone to have more self-belief and positivity about their future, once they have identified what they really want from life. The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism - Naomi KleinAn investigation that spans four decades of history, from Chile after Pinochet’s coup to Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union, from Baghdad under the US “Shock and Awe” attack to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. It is a great read and a really thought-provoking book especially in current times. Gospel According to Luke - Steve Lukather and Paul Rees This is the autobiography of Steve Lukather, one of the greatest guitarists and session musicians ever. Whilst he had significant success as bandleader for Toto, he also wrote and performed on some mega hits and had serious fun whilst doing so. Having seen him live in London last year, his back catalogue has been the soundtrack to much of my Covid-19 life! The War of Art - Steven Pressfield As a fictional author, Stephen Pressfield talks about the daily regime he goes through to get into ‘the creative zone’ so he can write a novel. It is very relevant to people going through change, doing something outside of their comfort zone and for when putting it off until tomorrow seems like a good idea. It explores how the mind can create resistance and gets in the way of you sitting down and ‘doing the work’. 27 Powers of Persuasion - Chris St. Hilaire As a marketer, I was drawn into the cover quote ‘smart strategies to help communicate more effectively and start winning people over’. I bookmarked Power #2 Evaluate the Egos and I loved the example of Starbucks introducing tall, grande and venti into our vocabulary. Power #12 Own the language. The Art of Happiness - The Dalai Lama Created for Western minds to interpret the principles of Tibetan Buddhism, this book offers guidance on approaching the everyday with a different outlook. It's about finding balance and complete spiritual and mental freedom - something we can all benefit from right now!
